Gamma Camera

A DTPA renal scan is performed to evaluate the functioning of the kidneys. The test involves the intravenous administration of radiopharmaceutical material - Tc-99m DTPA - to find out any site of the blockage. It helps find out the blood supply and flow of urine from the kidneys.

It is a nuclear medicine test that combines bone scan and SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) to detect areas of abnormal bone growth due to fractures, tumors, and other bone diseases. A radioactive tracer is injected intravenously and a gamma camera detects gamma radiation to create a planar image of the bones.

The Thyroid Scan Test is shorthand for 99mtc Pertechnetate Thyroid Scintigraphy Test is used to assess the thyroid uptake and scintigraphy using radioactive tracer – 99mTc-pertechnetate. The thyroid uptake is performed to determine the function of the gland. 

A DMSA scan is an imaging test that finds out the function, size, shape, and position of the kidneys. It also helps to know whether the kidneys are damaged or scarred. A short-lived isotope DMSA (dimercapto succinic acid) is injected to know how well the kidneys are working. Pictures of the kidneys are then taken using a gamma camera.

Low-dose radioactive iodine-131 (RAI) is a therapy (upto 10 millicurie) that has been widely used in treating patients with thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism), caused by differentiated thyroid cancer. The RAI gathers in thyroid cells and destroys the thyroid cancer cells.
